THE MALE SEXUAL ORGANS: THE BULBO-URETHRAL GLANDS AND THE SEMEN

The BULBO-URETHRAL GLANDS are two small glands, each about the size of a pea, situated on the outer side of the membranous urethra. Each gland has a duct about 3 centimetres long opening in the membranous portion of the urethra. The prostate, the seminal vesicles and the bulbo-urethral glands secrete the milky white alkaline fluid which blends with the semen and nourishes the sperms. The sperms need fuel for their motility which is supplied by the fructose present in the semen. The sperms from the testes are stored in the epididymis.

The SEMEN, a thick, whitish liquid, consists of the products of the tubules in the testes, the sperms and the epididymis. The prostate and the seminal vesicles supply the fluid part. The total quantity of semen at an ejaculation is 4 to 7 millilitres and contains on an average about 60 to 120 million sperms, of which only one fertilizes the ovum. All the other sperms disintegrate. The sperms retain their motility for sixty days and their fertilizing power for thirty days. If a seminal ejaculation does not take place, the sperms ultimately degenerate by a process of liquefaction. Fertility in the male is reduced if the sperm count is below 60 million or if more than 20 per cent of the sperms have abnormal heads or the motility of the sperms is reduced.
